All Acura Models – Five Star Safety Rating!
Acura is the only auto manufacturer to have every model in the top government and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test ratings. In the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests of side- and front-impact crash safety for front and rear passengers, all vehicles received the highest five-star rating.
How a test is conducted:
Full-width frontal impact crash test - NHTSA and OSA currently use this process for the full-width frontal impact collisions. Test dummies are seated in the vehicles driver and front passenger seats. The vehicle crashes head-on into a rigid concrete barrier at 35 mph. Afterwards, researchers measure and evaluate the impact on the dummies’ head, chest, and legs.
This test provides very high deceleration forces to the test dummies and is particularly well suited to the evaluation of occupant restraint systems such as seat belts and air bags. Of note, however, the damage done to the vehicle itself is not assessed. On order to receive a five star rating, there has to be less than a 10% Chance of life-threatening injury.
Side Impact – Testing for side-impact protection is done by running a 3,015 lb moving trolley into the driver’s side of the car. As with frontal impact testing, the side impact test is conducted at five mph above the federal standard, which means the trolley hits the vehicle at 38 mph. Researchers again, measure and evaluate the impact on the dummies. In order to receive a five start rating for the “side impact” test there has to be less than a 6% Chance of life-threatening injury.
